Garden Suite Petition

We the undersigned would like the City to amend the current “as-of-right” Garden Suite by-laws, returning neighbour right of notification and Committee of Adjustment meetings for any 2-storey build Garden Suite permits.  One-storey Garden Suites without basements can proceed “as-of-right”.

Additionally:

  • No windows facing rear-yards without ensuring adjoining property privacy first
  • Ensure density protects the environment, tree canopy and aging infrastructure
  • If a builder cuts down a mature tree for a Garden Suite, they must replace it with another mature tree elsewhere
  • Declaration of end-use filed with City of Toronto. Will it be for parents, grown children or multi-family use? This protects against owners who claim it’s for older parents then use the unit for short-term or more lucrative, illegal AirBnB rentals
  • Non-Severable: Ensure these cannot be sold separately from the main property in future and must share utility connections routed through the primary dwelling
